THE SARASOTA MODERN HOTEL, Sarasota, FL
This is the design of a new 89-room boutique hotel in the Rosemary District. Stephen designed the building, interiors and pools/exterior environments. The hotel is a celebration of this seminal moment when Sarasota became the epicenter for experimentation in architecture. Many of the key design elements for the hotel, its simple volume floating above the landscape, the blurring of inside and outside space, the use of local materials and methods, are all derived from the Sarasota School of Architecture of the 1940s.
There are three separate pools (originally were connected) each with a different size and temperature. The main pool is large and cool; the spa is intimate and hot; and the plunge cool is freezing cold. Guests go from pool to pool to invigorate their bodies.
